Beer, Testosterone and Prostate Health

Why you should drink beer quite moderately!

Beer and Testosterone

There's nothing more manly than spending your afternoon drinking several pints of beer, right? Wrong! Well, for what it’s worth, that may be right in the social point of view; in the biological point of view, however, nothing could be further from the truth…
The fact is that excessive beer consumption lowers considerably the levels of the primary male hormone: Testosterone.
Why? The reasons can be found in its ingredients:
-Hops:
Hops, which are essential flavoring and stabilization agents of beer, are one of the most powerful sources of Estrogen (a female sex hormone) that can be found on Earth. 100 g of hops can contain from 30,000 to 300,000 IUs of Estrogen, and most of it is the potent estrogen ‘Estradiol’. Estradiol consumption by men is known to cause a direct lowering of testosterone levels and it is also linked to decreased ability of testosterone production.
-Alcohol
The alcohol, which is a result of the fermentation process of beer, stimulates the brain to produce “Beta-Opioid Endorphins”. Even though these endorphins are responsible for making you relaxed after a few beers, they are also known to have a negative effect on Testosterone biosynthesis. Moreover, chronic high alcohol consumption boosts the activity of the Aromatase enzyme, which converts Testosterone to Estrogen.
-Barley
Barley, the cereal from which beer is obtained, is rich in the polysaccharide beta-glucan, which is associated with lowering the levels of cholesterol. However, beta-glucan consumption induces increased levels of Prolactin, which is a hormone best known for allowing women to produce milk. As you can easily infer, high levels of prolactin are not good for men: elevated prolactin levels decrease testosterone levels in men by increasing the activity of the alpha-reductase enzyme, which converts the testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
And what are the consequences of lowered testosterone or increased DHT/estrogen in men? Are they bad? Well, those consequences are listed below, and we leave it for you to decide.
-Breast growth (that’s right, this can happen to men!)
-Decrease in muscle and bone mass
-Balding
-Diminished facial hair
-Thinner skin
-Increased health risks, namely prostate disease

Beer and Prostate

Excessive consumption of beer can have quite a negative impact on prostate health. Basically, the reasons for this are:
-The stealing of our precious mineral, Zinc.
When we consume alcohol, our body is required to metabolize it or, in other words, to transform it into harmless compounds that may be used as nutrients. However, the metabolism of alcohol requires a lot of the mineral Zinc. After several beers, our body will eventually become Zinc deficient.
Zinc deficiency has a special negative impact on the prostate. In normal conditions, the prostate gland contains a particularly high concentration of this mineral when compared with other organs, and nature did not make it so for no reason. When Zinc deficiency occurs, the prostate is the first organ to suffer. In fact, Zinc deficiency is associated with prostate enlargement (BPH).
-The hormonal imbalance.
As mentioned before, excessive beer consumption by men will induce hormonal changes. Basically, these changes are:
oIncrease of dihydrotestosterone levels
oDecrease of testosterone levels
oIncrease of estrogen levels
All these hormone changes in men are associated with prostate disease, namely prostate enlargement (BPH) and even prostate cancer.
When untreated, many enlarged prostates turn cancerous, which inevitably leads to debilitating medical procedures such as surgery, painful radiation, sickening chemotherapy, and even death.

What about young men?

At this moment, you may wonder why are there so many young men that drink lots of beer and don’t seem to have prostate problems.
Well, with age, unfortunately, our body’s ability to naturally fight hormonal imbalances decreases greatly; indeed, old men have much more difficulty to breakdown DHT than young men.
Nevertheless, if the young men are not careful, they will eventually end up with “old men problems” much sooner than expected, including prostate disease. For example, if you pay attention to young men nowadays, you’ll notice that balding is no longer an old men problem.

And what if you already slowed down your beer intake, but the symptoms take too long to disappear?

If you want to speed things up, you just have to extra-nourish your body with specific nutrients. You can easily do that with natural supplementation.
A very good example is the natural food supplement SSP3-forte. This supplement has the exact ingredients to help you to stop BPH and its symptoms.
